Digital rights are GBV rights: TYA's campus campaign thesis
TYA is designing a response pathway for deepfakes and image-based abuse before the Northern launch.
Online abuse is not a separate category of harm. Deepfakes, non-consensual image sharing and online harassment are gender-based violence, and survivors need the same dignified, joined-up response.
The scale of the problem
A UN Women global poll found 58% of girls and young women have experienced online harassment before 25. A 2024 UNFPA study of East African universities found nearly 90% of students witnessed technology-facilitated GBV on campus.
Our response pathway
We are designing a response pathway that links legal aid, psychosocial support and platform reporting. It will be tested with campus campaigns ahead of the Northern launch, with public education in English first and Chichewa to follow.
